    <b>WINSTON-SALEM</b> — Safety is the N.C. Department of Transportation's highest priority when it comes to those who travel North Carolina's roads. Below are some general guidelines for various situations that can help drivers, motorcyclists and bicyclists safely arrive at their destinations.
</p> <p>
Even though workers might not be present in work zones, motorists should still expect narrowed or closed lanes, traffic shifts and reduced speed limits as well as other conditions that might affect normal travel.
</p> <p>
The following guidelines apply not only to general travel but also travel through work zones:
</p>
<ul>
<li>Stay alert</li>
<li>Wear a seat belt</li>
<li>Don't drink and drive</li>
<li>Be patient and obey posted speed limits. (The penalty for speeding through a marked work zone is $250.)</li>
<li>Use alternate routes, when possible, to avoid traffic congestion.</li>
<li>Use approved child restraints</li>
<li>Be patient and obey the posted speed limit</li>
<li>Don't tailgate</li>
<li>Avoid in-car distractions</li>
<li>Watch out for road debris</li>
<li>Leave early to get a head start on your drive and travel at non-peak times.</li>

    <b>WINSTON-SALEM</b> — N.C. Department of Transportation contractors have closed a portion of Business 40 in Winston-Salem while crews continue installing bridge girders and performing overhead work.
</p>
<p>
Westbound Business 40 approaching Peters Creek Parkway has been closed in both directions between Cloverdale Avenue and Peters Creek Parkway. The roadway will remain closed until 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 16. All work is weather dependent.
</p>
<p>
"Intermittent closures for the Business 40 Improvement Project, will be needed for the protection of workers and the traveling public," said NCDOT Division Engineer Pat Ivey. "We'd like to thank the public for their patience as we work with our contractor to improve this portion of the interstate and ultimately the lives of drivers in and around this bustling community."
</p>

Drivers will be able to detour using West 1st Street, Cloverdale Avenue and Peters Creek Parkway in both directions.

    <b>WINSTON-SALEM</b> — N.C. Department of Transportation contractors will close a portion of Business 40 in Winston-Salem for the completion of the 4th Street bridge demolition that started last month and was delayed due to weather.
</p><p>
The inside westbound lane of Business 40 will close at 9 p.m. on Wednesday, April 25, between Cloverdale Avenue and Peters Creek Parkway. Then, from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., all traffic has to detour off Business 40.
</p><p>
The roadway will reopen to traffic by 6 a.m. on Thursday, April 26. The schedule will repeat eastbound on Thursday night and work will end; weather permitting by 6 a.m. Friday morning.
</p><p>
“The closure is needed for the protection of workers and drivers as the demolition requires crews to work inches away from the roadway,” said NCDOT Division Engineer Pat Ivey.
</p><p>
Travelers can detour using Cloverdale, 1st Street and Peters Creek Parkway in each direction.

    <b>WINSTON-SALEM</b> — N.C. Department of Transportation contractors will alternate closing eastbound and westbound lanes on Business 40 near Peters Creek Parkway while they drill into the soil for ground testing work related to the Business 40 Improvement Project in Winston-Salem.
 </p>
<p>
"This soil testing is a critical part of determining the safety of the foundation along the construction site," NCDOT Resident Engineer Mezak Tucker.
  </p>
<p>
The next round of lanes closures will take place nightly from 9 p.m. until 6 a.m., Sunday, April 8 through Wednesday, April 11, weather permitting.
  </p>
<p>

    <b>WINSTON-SALEM</b> —  Drivers can expect closures in early March as crews work to demolish the Fourth Street bridge.</p>

Starting Friday, March 9 at 9 p.m., both directions of Business 40 will close between Cloverdale Avenue and Peters Creek Parkway. They will reopen to traffic by 11 a.m. on Sunday, March 11, weather permitting.
</p><p>
The Fourth Street bridge will remain closed until reconstruction is complete in January 2019.
</p><p>
Local drivers can travel the roadway up until the point of closure, then use Cloverdale, First Street and Peters Creek Parkway in each direction to detour around the closure.

    <b>WINSTON-SALEM</b> —  Nighttime lane closures on Business 40 needed last month for the installation of guardrails and barrier walls have ended for this phase of work along the Business 40 Improvement project in Winston-Salem.

Work requiring both lanes along Liberty Street to close will also end; weather permitting by 5p.m. on Friday, Feb. 2. Demolition work however continues on Liberty Street, requiring the right lane adjacent to the Old Steam Academy building to remain closed.

Contractors must close a portion of First Street between Poplar Street and Brookstown Avenue next week as crews continue new waterline installations. The installations span the project between Church Street and Peters Creek Parkway.

    <b>WINSTON-SALEM</b> —  The N.C. Department of Transportation has planned lane closures on Business 40 for later this month so crews can install a guardrail and barrier wall in the area.

Weather permitting, the outside lanes of eastbound Business 40 from Crafton to Broad streets will close nightly from Jan. 29-31. Closures begin at 9 p.m. each day and reopen at 6 a.m.

Liberty Street, meanwhile, is down to one lane from Business 40 to Cemetery Street to give crews enough space to demolish the CBI and Steam Academy buildings.

“While these closures have ended, drivers on Business 40 can expect sporadic daytime lane closures along Peters Creek Parkway between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. over the next few months for roadway work,” said NCDOT Resident Engineer Mezak Tucker.
</p><p>
Project work will also mean future closures at the following locations:

Liberty Street will be narrowed to two lanes between Business 40 and Cemetery Street fr three weeks starting Monday, Jan. 8, while demolition work starts on the CBI building.
</p><p>
The following week, starting Monday, Jan. 15, Liberty Street will be narrowed to one lane for demolition work of the Steam Academy building.
</p><p>
These lane closures will end Friday, Feb. 2, weather permitting.
</p><p>
“Narrowing lanes will allow crews to work safety alongside traffic while maintaining connectivity for drivers in this area,” said NCDOT Division Engineer Pat Ivey.
</p><p>
Near the end of the month, closures in the vicinity of Apple Street and Gregory Street will be needed for rock removal work.

    <b>WINSTON-SALEM</b> —  Thanks to N.C. Department of Transportation design-build contractors for the Business 40 Improvement Project, daytime lane closures along I-40 Business at the Peters Creek Parkway bridge have ended for drivers in Winston-Salem.</p>

    “Our contractor <a href="http://www.flatironcorp.com" target="_blank">Flatiron Construction</a>, doubled their shifts over the last month accelerating the work from 45 days down to 16, providing earlier relief for drivers,” said NCDOT Resident Engineer Mezak Tucker.
</p>
<p>
“We are delighted that with encouragement through incentives and weather conducive for construction, the contractor was able to work with NCDOT to accelerate their schedule,” said NCDOT Division Engineer Pat Ivey.
</p>
<p>
Contractors will resume nighttime only closures of the inside lanes along this portion of Business 40 from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. starting Dec. 14, as well as continue the up and over nighttime traffic pattern along eastbound Business 40 at Peters Creek Parkway, as needed for preliminary work on the Business 40 Improvement Project.

These nighttime lane closures will be allowed through the holiday season Friday, Dec. 22, through Tuesday, Jan. 2.</p>

Department of Transportation contractors will implement an up and over traffic pattern along eastbound Business 40 at Peters Creek Parkway as preliminary work for the <a href="http://www.business40nc.com/en-us/pages/Home.aspx">Business 40 Improvement Project</a> continues in Winston-Salem.</p>
<p>
"Contractors will be working on the center bridge support for the new Peters Creek Parkway bridge over Business 40 and need to close the highway at that location for safety while work is underway," said Division 9 Resident Engineer Mezak Tucker. </p>
<p>
Drivers heading eastbound on Business 40 will be shifted into a single lane from 9 p.m. until midnight. From midnight until 6 a.m., contractors will close both lanes on eastbound Business 40 and all traffic will be directed to exit onto the Peters Creek Parkway ramp. Drivers will then cross Peters Creek Parkway back onto Business 40.</p>
<p>
This traffic pattern will be in place nightly starting Tuesday, Oct. 31, and will last until mid-December, except during holiday work restrictions.</p>

    from 9 p.m. until 6 a.m. In addition, beginning Wednesday, Oct. 25, eastbound Business 40 traffic will be detoured up the exit ramp, across
    Peters Creek Parkway, and back down the entrance ramp, from midnight until 6 a.m. Due to this detour, Peters Creek Parkway will be reduced to one
    lane as motorists approach the Business 40 interchange.
</p>
<p>
    Beginning in early December, the inside lane of Business 40 in both directions will close, both day and night, as crews work to complete the new bridge foundation.
    This continuous closure is scheduled to remain in place for 45 days.
</p>
<p>
    There will also be periodic daytime lane closures along Peters Creek Parkway beginning mid-October while crews perform clearing operations near the Business 40 interchange.
    The closures will be installed between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., when needed.
</p>
<p>
    For this project, there will be no lane closures on Business 40 or Peters Creek Parkway from Nov. 21 through Nov. 26, due to holiday travel restrictions,
    said Division 9 Senior Assistant Resident Engineer Larry Shaver.

13Traffic Shifts on Thursday Along Salem Creek Connector Project

<strong>WINSTON-SALEM</strong> – N.C. Department of Transportation contractors will shift lanes along U.S. 52 northbound between mile markers 108 and 109 from the outside lanes to the inside lanes while crews complete noise wall and pavement installations, curb, gutter and guardrail construction in Winston-Salem.</p>

“This work is being done as apart of construction along the <a href="http://www.ncdot.gov/projects/salemcreekconnector/">Salem Creek Connector Improvement Project</a> in Forsyth County, and will be done overnight to minimize the impact to traffic,” said Division 9 Assistant Resident Engineer Zach McLaughlin.</p>

The shift is taking place between Waughtown Street and Salem Creek Parkway (exit 108) from 9 p.m. until 6 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 5.</p>
<p>
Crews will be working alongside traffic during this time and drivers should use extra caution in the work zone. Motorists should watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit when traveling through work zones.</p>
